Welcome to the World of Jaron Aviv Hollander
Jaron Aviv Hollander is a director, teacher, and performer working at the intersection of devised physical theatre, circus, and puppetry. He teaches actors to think on their feet and, quite literally, walk on their hands.
Jaron's directing and teaching practice grew out of three decades inside the worlds of circus, clown, and ensemble-devised theatre. He holds an MFA in Puppet Arts from the University of Connecticut and a BA in Theatre from UC Santa Cruz, and trained at Dell'Arte International, CircoArts in New Zealand, and the San Francisco Circus Center under Master Lu Yi. He performed with Cirque du Soleil, co-founded Impact Theatre in Berkeley, and founded the Kinetic Arts Center in Oakland, which he led for twelve years and grew into a debt-free organization recognized with the ACE Innovation in Education Award.
He continues to tour internationally with The Submarine Show, a wordless physical comedy he co-created with longtime collaborator Slater Penney, which has earned multiple Fringe Festival awards since 2009.
In higher education, Jaron has taught at the University of Connecticut and guest lectured at the Yale School of Drama. His broader teaching includes the Clown Conservatory, California Shakespeare Theater, Berkeley Repertory's School of Theatre, and Circus Smirkus. His pedagogy centers liveness as risk and responsiveness, treating actors as co-authors and approaching the body as a primary dramaturgical instrument.
